How To Exhibit for Under $1000 | Trade Show Hacks That Help You Save!
Have you ever walked through a trade show and thought “Everyone here must be rich… I could never afford THIS!"
The displays, the lights, the graphics, the people - yes trade shows can get expensive but there’s a few tricks of the trade to help you pull off an incredible exhibit, at just under 1000 bucks -
I’m Steve Rad - Founder of backdrop.com - we’ve helped thousands of brands achieve their marketing agendas and exhibition needs, whether your a mom and pop shop attending your first trade show, or a fortune 500 company, we’ll help you do it on time and on budget!
So here’s the reality - Most booths you see? Overbuilt. Overspent. Not even optimized for sales or lead capture.
And if you’re just starting out, the last thing you need is an overpriced trade show display that can’t convert prospects into business.
So Today, I’m going to show you exactly how to exhibit at a trade show for under $1,000, while looking professional, and maximizing your true brand potential.
Because when it comes to trade show booths, you don’t just need money — you need strategy, clarity, and a cohesive marketing message to drive your brand forward.
Let’s break it down.
Before we get into step 1, I want to just talk about the importance of PICKING THE RIGHT SHOW
Your biggest cost is booth space, being the actual concrete that you’re registering to rent for those few days.
If you’re just starting out, obviously don’t go and book the most expensive show - be realistic with your expectations and get in front of shows that have the biggest registered audience, in terms of attendance, for the lowest cost, to maximize the potential yield.
Also, be sure you understand the exact target audience as to who you’re targeting at that show. What is the best case scenario? What are you hoping to happen from exhibiting at this show, and how will you attending help you achieve that.
If you’re really really new, and just launching your brand, look for
-
Local industry events
-
Niche expos
-
Smaller regional shows
These will run you just a few hundred bucks to register for a 10x10. And the ROI is often better than the huge expos. Because smaller shows give you
-
Longer conversations
-
Easier networking opportunities
-
Less competition
-
And way more actual attention so you’re not lost in the shuffle
And here’s a beginner hack people never use: Ask the show organizer or try to book any available corner booths.” Most small shows don’t up-charge for those,
But a corner instantly adds two open sides, doubling your visibility.
It’s free real estate exposure— something you need to jump on if available!
Now let’s talk about your actual booth.
This is where most companies blow their budget or allow for the wheels to come off -
Our budget in this scenario is 1000 dollars -
For that price point,
You’re going minimal, portable, and smart.
The GO to backdrop for me is always the QuickZip -
It’s a sleek and slender backdrop, with a high resolution print, at about 700 bucks.
Can you get one for half that price on TEMU, absolutely.
Is it going to fall apart after the first time you use it, probably.
Is there a chance the backdrop from Alibaba express doesn’t even show up in time for the show and you end up missing the event and looking ridiculous in front of your competitors - maybe
But for the sake of this example, lets budget 700 bucks, for a premium product, with a high resolution graphic, that includes not only an American support team, but a lifetime warranty on the materials to ensure you’re always dialed for whatever show or brand you’re looking to promote -
Next and depending on what you’re selling or promoting at the show, I’d suggest a 6ft folding table, those usually run about 40 bucks -
And what we’ll do then is slap a graphic table throw on that bad boy, which sets us back another 200 - but now you have depth in the stand, you’ve got layers, and now you’re able to sit or stand in the aisle with an extension of your brand and work folks as they walk past your booth.
If you don’t need a table, or maybe you’re like me and you don’t want to sit during a show, I’d swap out the table for a retractable banner stand. Now instead of a table, you’ve got a tall and narrow graphic with another layer of your brand story.
The goal here is to create depth and get something up into the aisle so that you can’t be ignored -
A banner stand will only set you back about 150 - which puts us well under the 1k budget.
Now the best part about this setup so far is that it all fits into a small carrying case -
This means you’re either shipping this thing to the show or hotel for under $100 bucks, or even better you bring this thing with you on the plane as checked luggage.
No crate fees. No union labor. No forklifts.
You carry it in yourself, you set it up in under an hour, and you go get drinks and network with potential customers.
That’s it - that’s the core of what you need to exhibit, and we’ve got you locked in at $850 - ask our team for active coupon codes and promos, we’ll even kick you back $100 if you post a picture during your show on tag us, so many fun ways to save and expose your brand, you just need to get vocal and hustle -
Let’s say you have a slightly bigger budget like 500 more dollars and you’re like Steve, I’m good at 1500 lets not be so frugal, what else do I need -
The only missing piece in this scenario that I want to highlight is flooring - and when you arrive at the show, if you haven’t ordered carpet or flooring yet, it can cost you anywhere between 300-500 dollars so just be mindful.
If your brand can coexist with a concrete look, then you’re good as is, you dont’ need to spend the extra dollars -
But if you need that touch of elegance or brand identity - then I would budget a few hundred dollars for foam flooring tiles,
And that’s how you exhibit at a trade show for under a grand — without looking cheap, without looking inexperienced, and without burning money.
I’ve got links int he bio for all the items i’ve mentioned - including the extras like the lights, flooring etc — comment with your feedback on any items that you think I’ve missed that have elevated your backdrops, I’d love to feature your brand and journey on an upcoming video.
